Formula

  • SGPA = Σ(grade point × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)
  • Credit points = grade point × credits

Weight every subject's grade point by its credits and divide by total credits.

Worked example

Four subjects

Grade and credits for each subject
O, 4 A+, 3 B, 4 8.5, 3

SGPA

8.32

Total credits: 14

Credit points earned: 116.5

How it works

With O (10) in a 4-credit subject, A+ (9) in a 3-credit subject, B (6) in a 4-credit subject and 8.5 in a 3-credit one, the credit points are 40 + 27 + 24 + 25.5 = 116.5 over 14 credits, an SGPA of 8.32.

The letter-to-point table used here is the widespread 10-point mapping (O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P = 4, F = 0), but universities vary, so if yours differs type the numeric grade points from your marksheet instead. After each semester, combine SGPAs with CGPA Calculator, and convert with CGPA to Percentage Calculator. For a US-style scale use GPA Calculator.

Assumptions and limits

  • Fail grades should be included with 0 points if your university counts them.
Your institution’s rules come firstBoards and universities set their own grading and conversion rules. Where they differ, the rule printed by your institution is the one that counts.
