Formula
CBSE: percentage = CGPA × 9.5Simple: percentage = CGPA × 10Custom: percentage = (CGPA − offset) × multiplier
- The multiplier and offset come from your institution's published rule.
Multiply the CGPA by the factor your institution specifies.
Worked example
8.5 CGPA with the CBSE multiplier
- CGPA (10-point scale)
- 8.5
- Conversion method
- CBSE: percentage = CGPA × 9.5
Percentage
80.75%
How it works
CBSE publishes a multiplier of 9.5 for converting a 10-point CGPA to an indicative percentage, so a CGPA of 8.5 becomes 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%. Many people also use CGPA × 10 as a rough rule, which would give 85%.
Universities are not consistent. Some use × 10, some subtract a small offset before multiplying, and some publish a table with different ranges. Because published rules conflict, this page doesn't claim a formula for any university: use the custom option with the rule printed on your marksheet, university website or prospectus. Employers and foreign universities usually accept the institution's own certificate or conversion letter above any calculator.
To go the other way see Percentage to CGPA Calculator. To compute the CGPA itself use CGPA Calculator; for marks-based percentages see Marks Percentage Calculator.
Assumptions and limits
- 10-point scale only.
- The × 9.5 factor is the multiplier CBSE publishes for its own grading; it is offered here as a common default, not as a rule that applies to every institution.
