Formula
simple: CGPA = (SGPA₁ + SGPA₂ + … + SGPAₙ) ÷ ncredit-weighted: CGPA = Σ(SGPAᵢ × creditsᵢ) ÷ Σ(creditsᵢ)
- SGPA — semester grade point average
Average the semester grades, giving each semester more weight if it had more credits.
Worked example
Four semesters with credits
- Grading scale
- 10-point scale
- Semester grades (SGPA)
- 8.2, 7.9, 8.5, 9.0
- Credits per semester
- 20, 22, 24, 18
CGPA
8.38
Simple average of the semester grades: 8.40
Semesters counted: 4
How it works
With SGPAs of 8.2, 7.9, 8.5 and 9.0 the simple average is 33.6 ÷ 4 = 8.40. If the semesters carried 20, 22, 24 and 18 credits, the credit-weighted CGPA is 8.38 — slightly lower because the weaker semester had more credits. Most universities report the credit-weighted figure, so add credits whenever you have them.
To convert a CGPA into a percentage use CGPA to Percentage Calculator — the rule depends on your university. To compute a single semester's grade from subject grades use SGPA Calculator; for the US-style 4.0 scale see GPA Calculator.
Assumptions and limits
- Result is rounded to two decimal places. Some institutions truncate instead — follow your own rule.
- Up to 20 semesters.
