Formula

  • overall % = Σ(score ÷ maximum × weight) ÷ Σ(weight) × 100
  • Each assessment contributes its percentage score times its weight.

Score each component as a fraction of its maximum, weight it, add up, and divide by the total weight.

Worked example

Assignment 30%, exam 70%

Score, maximum and weight % on each line
42, 50, 30 80, 100, 70

Weighted percentage

81.20%

Letter grade (US 90/80/70/60 scale): B

Total weight entered: 100%

How it works

A 42/50 assignment weighted 30% and an 80/100 exam weighted 70% give 0.84 × 30 + 0.80 × 70 = 81.2 out of 100. The table lists how many points each component contributed so you can see where marks are won or lost.

If the weights don't add up to 100% the tool scales to the total you entered and says so, which is handy while a course is still in progress. Letter grades here use the common US cut-offs (90/80/70/60); your school may use others. To work out what you still need see Required Marks Calculator; for a plain weighted mean use Weighted Average Calculator; for credit-weighted GPA see GPA Calculator.
