Your result will appear hereFill in the fields and press “Calculate marks”.

Formula

  • marks = (1-mark MCQ correct) + 2 × (2-mark MCQ correct) + (1-mark MSQ/NAT correct) + 2 × (2-mark MSQ/NAT correct)
  • − ⅓ × (1-mark MCQ wrong) − ⅔ × (2-mark MCQ wrong)
  • Multiple-select (MSQ) and numerical answer (NAT) questions have no negative marking
  • A GATE paper is out of 100 marks

Add the marks for right answers, then deduct a third of a mark for each wrong 1-mark MCQ and two-thirds of a mark for each wrong 2-mark MCQ.

How it works

A GATE paper carries 100 marks across three kinds of question: multiple-choice (MCQ), multiple-select (MSQ) and numerical answer type (NAT). Questions are worth 1 or 2 marks. Only MCQs carry a penalty: a wrong answer to a 1-mark MCQ loses one third of a mark and a wrong answer to a 2-mark MCQ loses two thirds. MSQ and NAT questions have no negative marking.

Count your correct and wrong answers by type, ideally from the official answer key, and enter them above. The calculator checks that the marks you have gained do not exceed 100, so a miscounted entry is caught, then subtracts the penalties and returns your raw marks.

Raw marks are not the GATE score. For papers held in several sessions the marks are normalised first, and the score out of 1000 is computed from the paper's published qualifying marks and top-0.1% average — enter those into the GATE Score Calculator. To view your result as a percentage use Marks Percentage Calculator, or the generic Exam Score Calculator for other schemes.

Assumptions and limits

  • Negative marking: ⅓ for 1-mark MCQs, ⅔ for 2-mark MCQs, none for MSQ and NAT — consistent across the sources checked for the 2026 cycle.
  • Raw marks only. Normalisation for multi-session papers and the final score are not applied here.
  • The answer key can change after challenges.
