Formula
experience = Σ (end date + 1 day − start date) over non-overlapping periods
- Both the first and the last day are counted as worked.
- Overlaps and adjoining periods are merged first.
Count the calendar from each start date to the day after the end date, merge overlaps, and add up.
Worked example
One job
- One job per line
- Acme Corp 2019-06-03 to 2022-03-31
Total experience
2 years, 9 months, 29 days
Total months (approx.): 33.9 months
Total days worked: 1,033
Total in years: 2.83 years
How it works
A job from 3 June 2019 to 31 March 2022 is 2 years, 9 months and 29 days — counted on the calendar from the start date up to and including the last day. If two jobs overlap (a notice period overlapping a new job, for example) the overlapping days are counted once.
When there are several separate periods, the years, months and days of each are added and every 30 leftover days becomes one month, a common HR convention; the table shows each job's own exact duration. Gaps between jobs are reported too. Single stretches can also be measured with Days Between Dates Calculator, and your resignation timeline with Notice Period Calculator. For your age rather than your career see Age Calculator.
